Piercing

About body jewels (piercings) with some words. The body jewel is the synonym of the English word piercing.  The word piercing itself refers to the wound or the hole where the jewel is gotten in.

It is a collective term because there are difference between piercing and piercing according to the historical ages, wearing methods, and the used devices.

During the history, before the appearance of the written pieces of relics, there had been some information considered to be authentic about pre- historical body jewels and devices, which had been found at burial, piety and religious places.

It can be supposable that piercings were the part of a sign system that could inform the community of the tribe about the individuals. These signs referred to the fulfilled position in the society, the political, the military and religious positions, and it could express wealth, marital status, or belonging to a close company. It was usual that they signed the useful, unique skills, like courage, fighting skills... etc.

At the end of the 20th century, we could be the witness of the revival of the body jewels in Europe and North- America; there are several reconsiderations of old ideas of piercings. After this period they have developed, transformed into a quite cheap mass produced products, without any important meaning. The only aims of piercing are the aesthetic quality, self expression, maybe it is the device of aberration.

The atmosphere of liberalism and the fashionable multicultural way of thinking favours to this process.

Nowadays the jewels can indicate anything, the cause of wearing can be various (as position, the chosen form of piercing), it is sure that everybody, who sees them or hears about them, never stays impassive. Piercings always provoke opinions, which can be positive or negative.
